KOTA KINABALU: Police detained six people caught driving under the influence of alcohol during roadblocks around the city centre.

City police chief ACP M. Chandra said during the operation, which began midnight yesterday, the police issued four summonses to road users for numerous offences.

“Numerous roadblocks were mounted around the state capital and during the three-hour operation, five people were detained for driving under the influence of alcohol.

“Police have also issued 85 summonses and confiscated 41 motorcycles and a vehicle for numerous road offences,” he said.

About 30 vehicles – 20 cars, six four-wheel-drives and four motorcycles, were pulled over for inspections during the operation, he said.

Chandra said such an operation would be carried out from time to time and urged motorists not to drive while under the influence of alcohol.

He added that the police would also target illegal racers and urged the public not to participate in any illegal activity.

“Members of the public who are merely spectators will also be detained for their involvement in the illegal activity,” he warned.
